Substitution Reactions:
The reactions in which a reagent replaces an atom or a group of atoms from the reactant (substrate) are called substitution reactions. These are generally shown by saturated compounds.
In case of alkanes their occur replacement of hydrogen with other atoms. Most of the saturated hydrocarbons are fairly inert and unreactive in the presence of most reagents. However, these reactions take place readily in the presence of sunlight e.g. In the presence of sunlight, chlorine is added to hydrocarbons at a rapid rate. In this reaction, Cl replaces H-atom one by one.
